Skeletal Remains - Beyond The Flesh
Old schoolers... Come forth! This was meant for you! The days were you all sat together around the fire listening to albums of early Death, Monstrosity, Obituary, Grave and all these death metal beasts, cursing and bitchin about the way death metal is being played nowadays, are over! Skeletal Remains are in town for good and their intentions are not friendly at all! The time machine took them from 1990 straight to 2011. Firstly known as 'Anthropophagy' but that didn't last long! The death bringing machine from California changed name into Skeletal Remains and under that they released a demo tape on 2011 and after that, they released this atrocity! "Beyond The Flesh" is their first full length and release for 2012 and I'm tellin you there couldn't be a better start than this.
Their love for the old school shit is obvious even from the song titles which give out the aura of an age left behind! 'Traumatic Existence', 'Sub-Zero Termination', 'Homicidal Pulchritude' and 'Desolated Isolation' are some of them, I think the most representative of the album, which contains 8 songs totally and a cover song on Gorguts! From the first minute it gets clear that these guys can play, and that impression stays intact till the end of the CD! Once you've heard it again and again, you'll see for your self. But besides their individual capabilities and their performance as musicians, it gets clear that these guys know better than anyone how to construct a purely 90s death metal song! Everything is there! All the elements that the guys from those ancient death metal bands were using, all the loops, all the beats, all there! If it didn't have a date on, one could swear that "Beyond The Flesh" was originally released back then! It will bring out the romance for that age even if someone never had it in him. I mean, after all, those 'golden' years date back, about 23 years or so! Pretty far for some, but for those brutalers here, looks like a day never passed!
It's that sound they achieved on this first full length of them that makes you wanna play their album over and over again! Their songs are not short in length but the way they are constructed and set, gives the whole album a nice flow! And this is a hard part for a band to succeed! Don't forget we're talking about sheer brutality here! No kiddin! And especially old school death metal with the long duration songs and the mainly mid tempo structures is a tough one for sure! Skeletal Remains play by the rules and in "Beyond The Flesh" give a lesson on how to be brutal, precise, old school and NOT boring! Their songs are mainly mid tempo with sporadical outbursts of blast here and there! Great guitar sound that brings out the awesome riffing on this album! The bass and drum sound couldn't be left behind, and follow the guitar absolution closely leaving no room for black spots or nagging! These all get wrapped together by an outstanding production! A fat sound that gives you the impression of somebody chocking you while you're trying to grab some air! The vocal part is another big theme on this album! Of course the awesome music couldn't be held back by less awesome vocal lines! And of course whoever dared to growl on this one should also be aware of the old school ways, and how to rip his throat off in order to produce vocal lines that would send the devil himself for rearrangements in hell!!This guy here does more than that. A throat that is harmed so bad that only a blend of Tardy-Vincent and Barnes would outmatch him! No inhales or gurgles or growling techniques for him! Just neck grinding and amputation of the vocal chords till none is left! And all that in this day and age! Wanna feel your neck break from the relentless head banging this release will urge you to? Then rot with them. And remember ladies… only death is real!!!
