Officium Triste - Mors Viri

The general feeling from this latest offering is the ocean/water, a watery substance certainly is on your mind as you Basque and float through this doom/death/atmospheric release. In some corners, I find total doom death metal albums a little pedestrian in places, but ‘Mors Viri’ and especially tracks like ’Your Heaven, My Underworld’ really give another dimension to the overall sound that you would normally take from the genre categorisation.

You will hear comparisons to Katatonia, Anathema and all those in between, in fact Officium Taste are like rather a few of the Peaceville recording artists of the past. The production is something that captures the essence of imagination perfectly and to those who may shun this style, the atmospherics are rather special and this is what seals the deal with this album. Being their 5th full length effort, I have no reference to their earlier material; this took a while to scribe down my actual thoughts as I drifted into different mind sets each time I listened to this. There is a remarkable feature of this album, if it gives you difference emotions each time then it must be good, it’s an album that sometimes keeps you guessing too. This is certainly an in depth listening experience, not a track by track release you can skip through at ease on a modern media player.

The album certainly warrants a further half point and from my perspective, this is an album I had an impression of before I heard it, how wrong you can be and ‘Mors Viri’ speaks volumes for the talent of this Dutch band and their foresight and ability to tell a sequence of stories rather than simply deliver a few short passages of music and text. Sit back, relax, turn down the lights and enjoy.
