Obscenity - Atrophied In Anguish
Damn it is good to see the old breed still alive and kicking. Obscenity is a band that breaths since 1989, and got their first demo released back in 1992. We're talking about dinosaurs in death metal dudes! 7 Studio albums on their back and since 2006 no new stuff... until now. "Atrophied In Anguish" is their new studio album and I really must say that it is a blast. Obscenity's music is a perfect combination of the American and European scene! On their new album you can find tons of blastbeats but also slow crawling old school stuff combined with melodic interpolations, once in a while, that doesn't abstract a single shed of brutality. The whole album is impressively fresh and has a clean crisp production that gets as dirty as it should when needed! We can not talk about influences here cause those guys were present in the making of this whole genre, but if were not familiar with Obscenity's heavy history, we would find a lot of bands in here. Bands like Malevolent Creation, Deicide, Monstrosity, Cannibal Corpse, but also Sinister, Vader and many more..
But wait, you know what? No fucking bands at all. This is Obscenity coming back with a death metal dynamite and we're talking about other bands, or band influences? Not at all. Those guys have a character. The whole album is swarming with death metal riffs. Riffs that strike you and stick into your scull. And that is I believe what takes this album a whole step above their previous albums. This album has a certainty on everything that is heard in there. It is a combination of technique and experience. Lots of experience and in Obscenity's case there are tons of it! "Atrophied In Anguish" is an album created by experienced professionals in death metal! It has no exaggerations and no lesser stuff that it already needs! It is raw when it should, slow when it should, raging fast when it should and melodic when it should! Why? There's no why! Because it should. Trust them. They know better!
