Napalm Ted - Swallow
From Finland, without listening to the band at all and just checking out the track list, or rather the cover versions, it’s no mistake that you will kind of know what to expect. Napalm Ted cross between grind, death, punk all in a typical short time period and remind you of the latter or most recent bands like Nasum. Slightly chaotic, slightly deranged with a few flurries of Neurosis added from time to time during the slower sections due to the augmented chords I can hear.
That said, I can’t hear where the actual individuality is here. Sure, you’ll warm mildly to this chaotic selection of tracks, but I struggle to find anything different or unique as it’s a tried and tested solution. Normally, I listen for the production, but this is quite sterile in terms of sustain for example unless slower tempos are engaged.
‘Napalm Jizzler’ stands out for me, it’s a touch groovy verging into death n roll, thankfully resulting in a brighter sound through the sound. ‘Into the Endless Pit’ is probably one of the most diverse tracks, taking styles from a sludge monster to a grind effort to a simple disorganised level of chaos. It depends on your take for this sort of thing. One thing though, the album is in no way meat and potatoes as expected, it has a wealth of personalities, however, I find it a touch too much Jekyll and Hyde for my liking.
