I Lied - World Insane

This is death thrash from Finland, only a five tracker but what this band do is make a proper statement of intent beginning with ‘Beaten Zone’. This takes you to a place that has a slight crossover sound, with an additional groove that resides in melo-death circles and all in all does much to satisfy your listening pallet even if this is a couple of years old when it was self-released but now it has been picked up by violent journey records. Balancing screams and growls the vocals lead you into a well written comfort zone, whilst some of the death metal eases you into the Dark Tranquility and old In Flames mode, more often than not. With this I find my comfort. The drift between styles is effortless and executed with a top level of precision and professionalism, take a listen to ‘Total Self Hatred’ that is a prime example of this.

‘Lizard Dreams’ has what I call a mini epic start, this sets the stage well, but I find the verse leads to a place that we have heard time after time. But to the bands credit, they mix it up, they add their own style and I really like the tom drumming that leads to a minor flirtation with groove before more of the same melodic death thrash continues the experience. ‘World Insane’ has something special, an epic flavour to the start for sure, this entices the listener to wonder what will come next and what will come next I have to ask. Every time I Lied goes into well charted territory they manage to rise above the dragging waters and give you something that much more individual, they certainly have many ideas and this release certainly flows well off the cuff.

Overall, this is an admirable effort, whilst straying into tried and tested areas many times, I Lied manage to steer clear of a pure copycat approach, yes you have similarities in abundance but I Lied put their own stamp on the music and provides a very in depth vision of what their interpretation of death thrash should be, worth checking out for sure, especially closer ‘World Insane’.
