Guilty As Charged - Leap Of Faith
One thing most of the metal community seems to be unaware of especially here in England is what a happening metal scene Belgium has. The place is crawling with talent! Guilty As Charged are the latest to spring from the long list of bands that are making waves in the metal underground. It’s refreshing to hear an album that has the potential to cross over to a much wider audience that aren’t already over hyped before they have even had a chance to show what they are really capable of.
Guilty As Charged play thrash metal with big choruses and tons of melody. Think of a Metallica album which incorporates elements of both “Ride The Lightning” and the black album. They actually come across quite similar to Trivium but don’t hold that against them! It’s not often a new thrash band comes out which bring to mind Metallica that don’t sound like a rip off of “Kill Em All” or sound like Metallica are the only band they listen to. Front man Jen Vuyssere has a great range and has a perfect balance in his voice of hitting soaring notes and maintaining that rough round the edges quality.
The rest of the band is on fire. One only has to listen to the licks and lead work on ‘Last Chance’ and ‘Leap Of Faith’. ‘I’ll never..’ with it’s mid paced groove rings to mind early Machine Head however the sound on this album is much more clean then those early days.
All in all, the band can play and they certainly know how to construct a solid metal song. “Leap Of Faith” is everything a debut album should be, although it’s not earth shattering in all fairness it shows a hungry band heading in the right direction and with the use of clean vocal’s and with lots of melodies and hooks the band can latch on to a young audience. It shows a band flexing their muscles, showing what they are capable of and above all the best quality of any debut album it leaves a curiosity of what the band might come with next…
