Gross Grolland - What Doesn't Kill Me Makes A Big Mistake
Russian Thrash/groove bands are a rarity as far as I am aware; however, the promise of “groove” in the PR material really does not bode well for my listening pleasure. Done well, yes, but done badly or commercially, it’s like everything that came out late 90’s and into the early millennium…that is boring dulcet songs that don’t really have any structure or excitement to shout about. So it is with baited breath ‘Kamikaze’ opens this release. Even with a strong sense of scepticism, I must admit, it’s not that bad. There are many thrashing elements, but these are usually underpinned by the groove and the trademark Anselmo scream. But unfortunately we don’t have shredding riffs to back up this level of comparison. The electronica in the background makes it sound like Static X’s debut, but missing the pounding rhythm of that release. Some of the song arrangements are disjointed and lose their “groove” before they have even had the slightest chance to grab hold of your ears, but I have to admit, when the band concentrate on the groove, an unintentional level of movement is inspired. The second track ‘Under Sight’, picks up the pace on the intro, I thought I was in for a treat, but then it slows down and the groove is back. I hear a lot of music that I believe I have heard before, almost a slowed down SYL riff, and there is something there for sure. For me ‘Policeman Tropillo’ and ‘Friendship’ stand out the most, these are more Pantera/SYL/Soulfly inspired tunes with a more death growl vocal this time. This vocal on this track (mainly ‘Policeman Tropillo’) is pleasing, as the raspy notations of previous efforts really irritate you. It’s unfortunate that only two tracks manage to remain my focus on this album, mainly because it has a defined story (musically), and it doesn’t have a million ideas mashed together at once like some of the other tracks. The album title really hits a harsh reality, especially for this listener, it certainly won’t kill me and it is a big mistake.
The remainder of the release reveals the same trick time and time again, speed slowing to groove and random sound samples intertwined for a certain teasing level of atmosphere, but in actual fact it highlights that there is not much here to start with and what there is on offer you will have heard over a decade ago.
