Exxxekutioner - Exxxekutioner
This'll be an extremely short, precise review. I'm all tuckered out after the week I've had... recovering from the new Annihilator, Onslaught and Warlord UK albums takes time.
Manchester's Exxxekutioner, besides having the most awkward-to-type band name on earth, are a bunch of fresh-faced thrash metal upstarts who blatently love their 80's sound. So much so that they've actually recorded this demo in the most old school way possible - they got a tape recorder, threw a leather jacket over it and hit 'record' during rehearsal. I'm not kidding. It sounds like it too, though the clarity is surprising it's also the demo's biggest letdown as everything is panned entirely to the left and it's generally... well, difficult to know what's going on sometimes. That aside, this is actually some very well written speed metal that's short, punchy and to the point and echoes the likes of Deathwish, Hallows Eve, early Onslaught and Sodom here and there. The vocalist has a great rasp to his voice, the guitars sound good, it's all quite a neat package of 80's nostalgia really.
Again, the audio quality of this release really leaves something to be desired - as a personal point of reference this would be fine, but perhaps not quite good enough to warrant an actual release. Exxekutioner have definitely got a lot of talent as the songs here absolutely rip the competition to shreds, but overall it's really, really let down by the recording quality so once the band manage to book themselves a spell in a proper recording studio, we'll be onto something very special indeed. That said, this is still worth checking out if you've got a soft spot for that nostalgia you get from ancient 80's demos or if you don't care whatsoever about recording quality. Prime speed metal for sure. Here's hoping their next release sounds a bit better.
