Cyclophonia - Impact Is Imminent

Norwegian Power Metal and Cyclophonia is nothing new to me, nor is it a bad thing either. This is a band that commands your attention through their constant high level presentation, really strong vocal harmonies that delivers a production that is beefed up enough to give vibrant life to an often limp lettuce genre, especially if you talk about melodic power metal. The songs are credited with having two vocalists, Andreas Angell and Kai Joar Kristensen, although I don’t know which one sings which parts, all I do find is that some of the higher keys fall short of power every now and again. Musically, it warms your heart like some very early Sonata Arctica, Insania or even some Dragonland, the album does not break too much from this mould throughout its entirety.

‘The Hero’ is soulful, musically vibrant and vocally great, melody is the key, and melody is what this band concentrate on and boy it works. Other righteous songs blend typical power metal patterns with this aforementioned vocal talent. I don’t figure this as a stand out release, a lot has already been said and recorded in the past in this genre but rather than taking anything away from Cyclophonia, it is warranted to state that they are damn good at what they do even if it sounds a little too contrived in places, it’s a difficult choice when you have so many peers to be compared against. Not one to be too negative, any power metal fan, or rather a fan of good strong power metal would do well to pick this one up. It has many positive attributes, but I would not go as far as saying its genre defining, but I must stress, it’s a relatively strong album.
