Angrepp - Warfare
Angrepp unleash their debut, 'Warfare' upon the masses like a hailstorm of bullets. The album is vicious but also catchy, making an interesting blend of thash, black, and even hints of death metal. They don't do anything revolutionary but they also try to stay away from the usual run-of-the-mill formula that other bands use, such as the 'repetitive chug' format. Instead, Angrepp open 'Warfare' with a brief introduction that suits the album very well: rolling tanks and a melodramatic background before jumping into "Five Horned Formation." Angrepp tend to sound more black metal on the guitars than thrashy, lending their musical style to the seamless tremelo pickings combined with blast beats while incorporating subtle catchy chugs here and there. The only thing that is really remotely thrash is the solos, which are preformed with enegry and great timing. The vocals too are not the usual black metal rasp; instead they sound like a death metal growl almost with just a tinge of shrieking, which certainly grabs the listener's attention and drives the music as a whole.
As far as music formation, the album tends to stay the same as Angrepp feels their formula works pretty well for them and they don't need to go too far into experimental territory. "Dead and Destroyed" feature a great catchy intersection where the guitars chug along to highs and lows and offer a more thrash base rather than the streaming black metal one heard on "Legions Arise." "Fiende" is a very aggressive track that opens like death metal and the drums are relentless until there's that long, distorted effect of the chords near the end to calm things down before they start blasting again. But, it would have to be "Rape, Kill, Rock n' Roll" that takes the cake on the album. Like its namesake, this track takes on a more rock based style, but what really makes it fun is the militaristic drum style the band keeps throughout the track. It suits the album perfectly!
Overall, Angrepp don't delve too much into the groove side of things, but fans of bands like Devian and Dead To This World will probably enjoy this very much. It's heavy and violent, but not so much it obliterates a listener like some of Vader's tracks would. Instead, 'Warfare' slowly lures the listener in track by track until they're hooked and then blasts them apart with the last few tracks, which tend to stay on the heavier side compared to the earlier ones. There is no mercy when it comes to a song like "Dictator." But, one also may notice that the rock bits from "Rape..." are stuck like fragments in them as well.
