Witchcurse - Still Evil
This is an authentic traditional heavy metal band from Greece, having previously found favour with their album ‘Heavy Metal Poison’ I kind of knew what to expect from the first two songs, which are new recordings (the latter two are previously available). I am not sure of the grammar but ‘I’m No Fooll’ certainly guides you to Maiden territory in their formative years before Bruce joined, and in all honesty, to those bands that subsequently copied that style. The music is pretty happening, the vocals have improved to a certain extend on this and ‘Way of Life’ which is a big bonus. They sound more controlled and capable of the higher register than that of earlier material that to be frank, struggled with the musical key of the track in hand.
‘Way of Life’ really takes you back to early metal days, gang vocal shouts and spine tingling riffs, often sounding like Maiden’s first single release (‘Running Free’), but there is a groove and a stance similar to the many new bands that are popping up all over the world, I especially take comparison to the UK band Eliminator. The production is dated, but authentic, the sound is really something that is warming and comforting to this old soul, this music is exciting, it always has been, it’s just popular again in this ever circling cycle of what’s cool and what is not. Witchcurse represent a musical genre that is the backbone of many modern metal influences, ‘Still Evil’ is certainly worth its weight in gold, or should that be denim, leather and studs?
These guys are metal, but what is sometimes lacking in the vocal stakes on the previously available material, is made up for in the musical barrage of fist raising steel on the two new storming metal monsters.
