Whore Of Bethlehem – Extinguish The Light

Having given the death metal scene a swift kick in the bollocks in 2014 with their debut “Upon Judas Throne” Texas dath metallers return with their second album “Extinguish The Light”.

Kicking off nicely with 'Ritual Purification' while backed up by a nice blast beat the riffage is mid paced and well balanced and brings to mind the late 90’s Steven Tucker era of Morbid Angel. Everything is nice and thick and where certain extremes and technicalities are held back it lets the song breathe and get through to the listener. There is plenty going on so the band don’t need to barrage you. 'Invocation' has a great doom impending main riff that introduces the song. The rest of the track bounces along between a thick groove and faster parts. Hell is unleashed when 'Overtaken By Evil' kicks in, which borders on black metal with James VanDenberg giving an inhuman screech over hellish riffing. He transitions between a death metal and black metal vocal style seamlessly. Think of Hate Eternal covering a black metal track and your nearly there. 'Possession' is a simple yet effective little interlude which breaks things up before 'Parasitic Abominations' attacks you, this track has some excellent solo’s and there’s even a bit of melody thrown in for extra atmosphere. 'Rebirth In Fire' is the albums signature track and the most instantly recognisable. There is melodic riffing and a memorable vocal pattern. It’s as catchy as death metal gets!

At 32 minutes this is a perfect half hour of death metal. It has the full package. The ferocious Blasphemy of Deicide, the brutality of Suffocation, the atmosphere and complexities of Morbid Angel, the tightness of Malevolent Creation and the fury of Hate Eternal all finished off with subtle hints of black metal. While I’m mentioning a lot of seasoned bands there is nothing old school about this band. Everything is modern and fresh. This is a band that understands death metal and has their roots firmly planted but are sharp and looking ahead. All they need is for Eric Rutan to produce their next album and they will be made!

This is an essential exciting new band which are a must for any self-respecting death metal fan.
