We All Die (Laughing) - Thoughtscanning
We All Die (Laughing’s) “Thoughtscanning” is definitely nothing to laugh at. However, when I first received this CD I couldn’t imagine anything with a name like this to be as good as it is. I figured it was some type of metal core and was not sure if I would like it or not. Upon putting this in my CD player and pressing play, this album took me on a sonic journey that I have not heard since I heard a doom metal band called Ocean Chief. While this particular CD isn’t doom metal it does have that essence that give you the feeling of a foreboding sickness but at the same time releasing and relieving you of all the horrors that lay within. It’s a strange feeling and kind of hard to explain but when you hear this CD, you’ll know exactly what I am talking about.
This 1 track album starts off with a nice little subtle riff with a nice bass line that sets the mood. A slight element of the ethereal to say the least. Extremely enticing and an excellent way to start things off. When the riffs come in it reminds me of that which is on the Opeth albums “Damnation” and “Heritage”. So within the first few moments you get that influence as well as a bit of a Storm Corrosion influence. Aside from that the riffs have a really nice classic, gothic, traditional metal feel to them. And I am going to go as far as to say there’s even a little bit of a blues influence how ever so slight it might be. The solos are played in such a way that it gives you a haunting, hollow type feel and when you combine this to the other aspects of the music, it can be summed up as another level of the sonic journey that this album is taking you on. When the vocals come in you are bombarded with a number of influences such as, H.I.M., Katatonia, Anathema, Lacrimosa, Porcupine Tree and other bands of the like. There are heavier, death-like growls on this album as well but as far as the vocals are concerned, the clean vocal pattern seems to dominate this tune.
This CD is all over the place, but like I said this is a journey and if you think about it “Thoughtscanning” is the perfect title for this album. One aspect of this album will have you thinking different things than perhaps another part would and that is all a part of that journey. With that being said, I firmly believe this is what the band wants. This is the type of music you can listen to and absolutely get lost within yourself and within your mind. This is not a long drawn out piece of nonsense you have here. This is a beautifully orchestrated piece of musical, mental, and emotional genius. You go from soothing tones to gothic/death metal to even a slight black metal reference in a few parts (at least as far as the music is concerned) and back again. Then from there it goes off in a different direction. You might even say that this album is an exploration of the self and of total existence and emotion.
I’m being very serious here. You just have to listen to this and let it soak in. This is a very odd album but even so, within this oddity lies such a musical creation that to analyze and nitpick every detail does not do it justice. I mean just picture the band Riverside on steroids and then add all of the above mentioned bands for good measure. This has got to be one of the best metal releases so far in 2014. I sincerely look forward to future releases from this band. Now, there is a version of this CD that has an Amy Winehouse cover tune on it, but I can tell you that youre much better off not getting that version because the cover tune is absolutely horrid and absolutely unnecessary and is nothing but a clusterfuck of nonsense tacked on as a bonus track to the ultimate ethereal sonic journey.
