Venial Sin - Sphere Of Mortality
Upcoming Portugal Prog Death group Venial Sin unleash their first EP for fans to enjoy just three years after their demo. Featuring six tracks of brief, but well performed music this is an excellent way to get engrossed in what Venial Sin has to offer. Some tracks like "A New Rose" are heavy chuggers with melody mixed in between and some appearances from clean vocals. The jerky atmosphere certainly shows the more technical moments and there even seems to be some eastern influence in the riffs. Other pieces like "Real End" are slower, more jazz fusion oriented and have Opeth touches with the clean vocals leading most of the way. And then there are pieces like the title track which blends to two together seamlessly for an excellent display of musicianship and clear cut distinction between soft and heavy. They even throw in a very atmospheric closer with some electronic percussive beats and a focus on keyboards and flutes which gives a whole new aspect to what Venial Sin can accomplish. Not only is it a great way to close the album but it also shows a wide variety of progressive options. At this point the band could either go Technical Death Metal, Jazz Prog or even Culturally Charged Metal in a way that Neochochwen does. Altogether, it makes an excellent opening for new and old fans to enjoy so hopefully future work will include all these elements.
