Thecodontion – Jurassic

Thecodontion is an italian band that extracted all guitars from their musical creation, preferring to present a stronger and much more present, bass guitar… in a way, it gives their sound the strength they try to pass on, to the audience, with the name, for example.

The band extracts creativeness from the following: "Thecodontia (from Ancient Greek, meaning "socket-teeth") is an obsolete taxonomic grouping, formerly used to describe a diverse group of reptiles, including the ancestors of dinosaurs and crocodilians, among others." (in Metal-Archives)

So… Dinosaurs. The main inspiration behind the band is, Dinosaurs. In a way, they are heavy as fuck, so… it makes sense. Not taking their inspiration as childish or unworthy of being put into music, but the analogy makes sense, once you hear the band’s music.

They come out as a hybrid of some sort. One foot in the black metal genre, another in the death metal genre… some slower moments, some faster moments… some grind thrown in there. It takes me back to Anaal Nathrakh, in a way. Not that they sound like AN, but they do mix plenty of sonic expressions, oh yes they do.

Does that, in the end, sound like something I want to go back to? Well, to be honest… no. it did nothing for me. This might come out as an extremely honest review, but it did sound like two guys, or are into extreme metal, wanted to create something that did resemble their may inspiration: a big and heavy freaking beast of an animal!

4 songs, never over 5 minutes long, do go by fast, but leave no mark, no scar, not one soul was touched by their musical creation… wait, the last one has this slower, mid-paced moment… if they were to do more in that vein, I might change my mind! The vocals sound plain and give no dynamics to the music, like the drums and the bass – the bass is heavy… period! Heard it more than once, but will not go back to it… sorry.
