Skullsmasher - Rocket Hammer Brain Surgery
Nice to do a review about a band who are label mates, sharing stage would make a crushing wall of sound, no doubt about that! Skullsmasher from Los Angeles CA are giving us some serious old school grindcore mixed with the modern sound of these days. They also recorded a demo titled “Cranial Emulsification” released by Night Rhythms Recordings and a DEMO EP releases independently.
Brandon Corsair (Draghkar, Azath, Grave Spirit) started this band as an ode to the ancient days of deathgrind in 2017. With Napalm Death, Terrorizer, Repulsion, Insect Warfare, P.L.F. as influences, you can’t miss this one out. “Rocket Hammer Brain Surgery” was mastered at Audiosiege by Brad Boatright (with Weekend Nachos, Nails, Magrudergrind, Wake, Tragedy on his résumé). The album will be released on CD/cassette and later on LP too.
All the named influences on this 15 minutes and 9 seconds of grind record will be heard. The only thing I have to say about this one is... the drum machine Gu Ji. For me grindcore without the energy of a real drummer just doesn’t do it for me. Although it pounds like hell and it blasts you away, the mechanic sound of the ride cymbal bothers me. Further it’s a nice album with great energy and you would throttle your pedal to the max driving on the freeway.
So yes, the album would go for more spins than one time, but a real drummer would make a great difference for me. I would go berserk in the pit seeing them live, that’s for sure!
