Skinlepsy - Condemning The Empty Souls

This is brutal thrash from Brazil, combination of modern groove and a lot of the US brutal thrash scene. Formed by seasoned musicians from a number of other bands, this is the first full length release by the band.

First impressions are ok, there is a lot of power, but second impressions may find you comparing riffs and arrangements from other artists which may sound harsh I know, but I have not truly pin pointed a jewel feature, a difference factor in this album after quite a few full spins which is a disappointing process if the truth be told. That said, this is not a poor release musically, far from it there is the title track to contend with that may please fans of the modern Slayer or Sepultura sound rather than style (quite bass heavy) I might add. But, there is a real gem with ‘Alienation’ to be fair to the band which has a really cool groove and an immense kick drum section battering throughout.

The story is quite a similar tale throughout, there is a little dynamic missing to push this further, it doesn’t really help being labelled or marketed as “brutal thrash” as you are stuck between something and nothing more often than not. ‘Condemning The Empty Souls’ is not a total loss of identity is you remove the arrangements from the equation, but this is not something that I can whole heartedly immerse myself into either. The gloss shine is still a bit dark and a bit dull and quite…well…“modern”.
