Sinister – Deformation Of The Holy Realm
“Deformation Of The Holy Realm” pretty much picks up from where 2017’s “Syncretism” left off but very much expanded upon. What I like about Sinister is you can tell while making death metal they are still very much fans of the genre and over the course of their catalogue they have added elements here and there and evolved along with the genre.
While later albums released in the last decade or so have been on the brutal side in the vein of Cannibal Corpse or Suffocation. “Syncretism” saw the band introduce little textures of orchestration thrown in giving the songs an extra layer without being over powering. On “Deformation…” This is more prevalent and is a nice touch because it give the album a real gothic horror movie feel. Intro track 'The Funeral March' is actually a fantastic piece of music that could easily fit in the score of a film. The opening title track kicks things off nicely in and catchy brutal way. Songs like 'Unique Death Experience' and 'Suffering From Immortal Death' have a dark melodic side to them with some blistering solos.
The sequence of the songs run very nicely, with little bits at the end of the songs which close the tracks while building up for the next one to start. The album plays like a concept album in that sense. It’s an effortless listen which flows wonderfully.
“Deformation Of The Holy Realm” is a brilliant addition to the bands expansive catalogue. While the first three albums and 2006’s “Afterburner” are still the bands landmark releases this is a fantastic release from one of death metal’s most consistent and under rated bands.
