Sickcunt – Sickcunt
The Russian band, Sickcunt, claims they are improvised avant-gore. Well…maybe. Their stuff is certainly gore. The guttural vox are weighty, the guitars are distorted in just that sick way, and the drums play fast and accompanying. And despite the 27 tracks contained in their Coyote Records released self titled album, I do not immediately hear much improvisation as I understand it in their work. I listen to some of the best improvisers in the business; Marc Ribot, John Zorn, Peter Brötzmann, etc. There are so many great improvisers. Most of them are in the jazz or avant-jazz scene of course but one could certainly imagine the pleasure of a truly improvised brutally heavy gore band. I even welcome the chance to hear one. Unfortunately, Sickcunt is a quality gore project that does not meet any abstract definition of “improvised music” that I know.
Now, their falling short of their self-description is not a comment on the music itself. The sounds are straight gore. My criticism about the release is that the drums sound too DIY for my tastes – too amateur. I would love to hear more variation in the drum styles and harder beats mixed in with the faster lighter skin-hits. Of course, I will bet cash money that Sickcunt puts on a fully engaged live show. I hope they come to my city.
