Shackles - Traitor's Gate

Shackles is an Australian band formed in 2000 althought the idea to start a band were made long before. They had no big plans for the future only to create songs that were build on the different influences from the members. The founding members were Rainer (bass), Ian (vox), Loony (guitar) and on drums Matt. After several line up changes the recording sessions failed and also their first shows failed. But they didn't gave up and played more shows in the area of Sydney.

The years went by and in 2004 there was a new line up and there was the chemistry. Better shows and better songs. Shackles began releasing demos in 2005 and 2006 and a virgin vinyl 7" in 2007. And now it has arrived, the debut full length as CD, LP and picture disc!

"Traitor's Gate" is a blast into the past with this thrash death metal. Shackles refers to bands like Possessed, Razor, Venom or Destroyer 666 with their tunes. The songs are vivid although they breath a grim atmosphere. Tempo is done the thrash way, up to fast tempo but with breakdowns to mid paced parts. All driven by the drums who, together with the bass, is pushing everything forward. Not too fancy but steady with basic rhythms. The vocal style is more on a monotonous way narrating then real singing or screaming/grunting. It fits the spirit but it could use a bit more variation. But the most vibrant thing is the guitar. Beside the razor sharp riffs, that are double layered, there the venomous leads. Just kick ass leads!

Among all those thrashers there comes the accoustic song "Exhumed From A Watery Grave" which only last for 1:28 mins. When you reach this track don't think it is over as there are two more songs that are putting the cherry on top. My favorite tracks are the title song and "Exorcised Remains". With "Traitor's Gate" Shackles released a recommended album.

1. Coiled In Sin
2. Iron Crosses
3. Malignant Expulsion
4. Traitors' Gate
5. Cat O' Nine Tails
6. Exorcised Remains
7. Exhumed From A Watery Grave
8. Shackled
9. Orgy Of Corpses
