Sexcrement - Sloppy Seconds
Provocative alcohol soaked lyrical themes and a brutal groove metal style is what Sexcrement brings to the table on this album. These Boston natives sure know how to get people’s attention with interesting lyrics to say the least. “Sloppy Seconds” lives up to its name with perverted song titles like, “Heard it Through the Rape Vine,” “Trucker Bombed,” and “Ride Johnny Ride.” The album starts out with a movie clip of an old man talking about when he dies he wants people to snort crack and drink at his funeral. Then after the sound clip the music crashes in with tremendous force from the double bass drum attack and the low tuned guitar riff. Besides the name of the song I really like “Heard it Through the Rape Vine.” The guitar playing is fantastic and the riff is very catchy while maintaining certain hardcore death metal elements. Drumming on this track sets the tone for the song’s powerful rhythm section that is well recorded capturing the intense time changes and blast beat rhythms. Even though I can’t really understand the singer the death growl vocals are extremely morbid that I believe works well with the heavy musical atmosphere. On the second track there is another audio clip of a guy saying, “Gives us the drugs dumb dumb.” I like how Sexcrement incorporates bizarre movie lines within their music because it fits in extremely well with their outrageous song titles. The music is still in your face growling groove metal that remains very consistent to what can be heard on the first track.
Then I heard track three “Well Hungover.” The song starts out sounding like a grindcore song with intense picking build ups, but then sounds like a classic groove rock song in the middle section which reminded me of old Kiss riffs. I did some research and found out that these guys are actually Kiss fans along with death metal bands like Cannibal Corpse and Goreguts. “Well Hungover” really displays Sexcrement’s groove death metal sound and shows how this band is influenced by a wide range of hard rock and metal bands. Another good song on the album is “Trucker Bombed.” The song starts out fast paced and levels out to a groovy riff that is filled with harmonics and brilliant drumming break downs. My mind is blown by the exaggerated growls and the lyrics are gruesome. On the last track “Ride Johnny Ride” I find this one of my favorite guitar riffs and the playing is very dynamic. Intense leads and chugging riffs enter my ears causing my head to start banging until the last chord is struck. Looking back over the songs on this album I can’t find one bad track. Production value on this album is amazing and the songs are all well composed where not one track sounds out of place.
Sexcrement at first caught me off guard with the band’s name and some of their song titles. I worried that this was going to be another Cannabis Corpse where the lyrics hold no real meaning and the music is subpar. However, I am glad I listened to this whole album and I highly recommend checking out Sexcrement. From the low death metal vocals to the grooved death metal guitar playing, “Sloppy Seconds” is a well put together album that exemplifies great metal musicianship. This band brilliantly combines technical death metal with catchy groove metal to create a solid release. “Sloppy Seconds” is no joke and once you hear the high power guitar tone along with the blood curtailing growls you will be hooked.
