Sectu - Inundate
These Swedes were formally known as Cimmerian Dome and have come out with 'Inundate' their debut album. When I think of Sweden and death metal, I usually associate the music with some sort of Entombed or Dismember clone. This could not be further from the truth when it comes to Sectu. Their brand of death metal is more akin to bands like Behemoth, Nile and some, but very few elements of the Floridian sound when the band slows the tempo down. There are many guitar sweeps and frantic use of the kick drums, especially in the album opener 'Age of Splendour' and to their credit, Sectu is very technical. The vocals are low and brutal, but the delivery to me is one of the things that ensures I lose interest in this record from time to time.
This is another band that has cut their teeth paying homage to bands that have come before them, the conundrum I have is that with all this influence, there seems like a little more work is required to arrange the ideas into one cohesive track to make it a brighter or refreshing experience and certainly the addition of some consistency would not go a-miss either. 'Unseeing Divine' has a Morbid Angel touch in the āeā to āgā album period, picking up speed and thankfully bringing some life into the recording with a more rapid snare drum attack. Some of the riffing is also momentous as executed on 'Dream Vessel' and this brings out the bumblebee effect in the guitar riffs. When this tempo reduces to a more slow and sludgy tone, the track tends to rely too much on this slower aspect, in places I really do think the music will stop.
The saving grace is Sectu's technical obsession as previously mentioned, in some quarters of the music world this is frowned upon, and I am still debating this thought as I listen to 'inundate' as there is not much else to entertain me if I am brutally honest. This is not a bad effort by any standards, there are elements where you feel you can walk upon hallowed death metal ground, but the unfortunate song arrangements gives the impression that they could have more work ahead of them, there must be more to give surely as it sounds just a little bit restrained.
