Roadside Burial / Corpsickled - Split
Hmmm…. “Where and how should I start this review?” I have repeatedly asked myself each time I have put this on, each time hoping to hear something appealing. Yet to date I am still untouched, with an opinion that increasingly leans to seek these tunes on offer only if among friends in a drunk situation, like at a home party or at a Sunday afternoon picnic just to piss off the neighbourhood. I mean the mesh of grind and death on offer – more the former than the latter and with a strong emphasis on the word “mesh” - holds simply so little that I could imagine no one who claims being sane to sincerely appreciate this, neither ROADSIDE or CORPSICKLE members themselves I guess, as both their websites show they are just taking the piss.
First up ROADSIDE BURIAL are proudly Australian (oh no don’t start with this shit again) and inspired by the simple things in life, those being Aussie beer (really simple things in life then), sluts and mangled corpses’ meat. They play straight to the point old school grind in the line of old NAPALM DEATH mixed with a touch of crust, yet fucked up with a sound of a drum machine that makes their old school sound lack beef, a simple thing in life for us poofters who would rather download this CD than buy it, thus saving ourselves cash for some good European beer, ….. and did I forget the sluts? After all these bunch are too busy drinking Tooheys down under - or at least working with their serious death/grind band BLUDGEONER who on the other hand is a prime beef act - to afford coming over to mainland world to grind ya teeth monga fuckers!
In come CORPSICKLE with Embalmed in Gastric Diarrhoea, how inviting And here one can here a sound leaning to both old school grind as well as the Pommie sound of more deathish BENEDICTION. But then again the continuous rattle of a programmed rhythm timber fucks this big time. Do not take me wrong, drum machines and triggers are ok if used appropriately but when used just to fill in, they destroy songs so much that I pick the length of the longest song here – that is 2.47 – to give both bands a rating out of 10. And that only thanks to the entertaining samples both bands put on between each songs, overdone if listening to this slab at home, yet a good break off the songs if drunk at a party. And seeing where they are coming from, it is not hard to get drunk off Aussie beer. Believe me, I’ve been there done that.
