Refusal - Epitome Of Void
From Finland Refusal comes to show their second album "Epitome Of Void" with French label Great Dane Records, three years after of their debut "We Rot Within". Formed in Helsinki in 2008, the music of Refusal is old death metal, mainly Swedish style (Entombed, Nihilist), with influence of old grindcore in the vein of Napalm Death, Nasum or Rotten Sound (as good Soumalaiset), and we can add some parts of other samples of noises, let's see.
All start with 'Suffocate' a rabid demonstration of power with hard riffing and blast beats, and vocals letting go rage, perfect to pit battle, similar to Napalm Death or Nasum. 'Hectic' madness is here with this impressive and destructive track, forcefulness, Nasum ghost is here. 'Disregard' some mid tempo and some little more melodic and thrash metal, no lose of power, of course. We can listen to some influence of Entombed in this song. 'Disgust' starting hard and blast beats, with some slow part and melodic riffs later.
'Slaves' in the beginning reminds Brujeria, but later becomes more death metal and closer to sounds like Entombed, the melodic riff reminds old school death metal, in the end a change of everything slower. 'Exploit' an explosion of fast and furious blast beat wrath, is crowd ready? 'Bound' follow the previous with a good riff, preparing for war, in this track I see similaity with Misery Index, mix of hardcore, death, grind…
'Futile' as the previous one, I hear some Misery Index influence, it seems to have two seasons in composition, firsts tracks some ideas and last three a change to more elaborated compositions, with more death metal influence, very good work of guitar in the end. 'Void' to finish the album a song that begins in the purest Finnish style, dense, brutal, dark, the best track for the end, a constant and fine riff present in most of the song.
A good mixture between two ideas of death/grind, I prefer the part closer to death in this case, good compositions, good musicians, maybe they are not doing an outstanding but a very good one and powerful music, with the back to old school, this band has taken the way of death/grind, with good note.
