Purgatory - Necromantaeon

Ever since their debut in 1996, Purgatory have unleashed the sounds of hell time and time again- death metal style. This time, it is with the unrelenting fury of 'Necromantaeon.' For those who don't know much about the band's sound, consider it a combination of Belphegor, Vomitory, and Deicide- one part thrashingly melodic and downright crushing death metal with gutteral vocals that spit hate and glory towards Satanism. Track after track it is a beatdown, especially due the monster vocals that are on top of their game on tracks such as "Glorification Of The Lightbearer." The guitars and drums are usually on overdrive, but thankfully the thrash bits add quite a bit of melody interspersed throughout so it doesn't become too monotonous or boring.

The only slight issue that may come with this album is that the music and vocals seem separate, like they are on different planes of pace. The vocals have the long, roaring bouts to them while the music just seems to carry on without staying in cue. On the other hand, it is advantageous because listeners can hear both clearly. "Scourging Blasphemies" is a great track that seems to keep on pace with both the music and vocal work while also resembling the most brutal of death metal tracks without the annoying click of a drum set trying to hammer away as fast as possible. The title track perhaps makes most use of the gutteral vocals along with a few layered, spoken words that sound pretty demonic themselves, while the music as a whole just obliterates away with no room for redemption. Leave it to "Collapse Of Tides" to complete the ensemble with a blistering ending- despite the monotony of the drums- and the album is complete, along with horrific samplings and all.

Death metal fans should feel privelaged to hear this album. Not only is it blasphemously well skilled, it also makes use of going for a more fearsome take rather than the more cliche, clearner style in production that so many modern death metal bands use. This is gritty and evil death metal that doesn't just tend to demo quality, but at the same time, the crushing power of the lyrics matches the sound which opens up for a very inspiring piece of music. Anti religious, yes, but on a more esoterical level.
