Purgation - Exterminated Malfeasance

Which bands do you know coming out of India?

Well, there are not so many bands. Exhumation from Mumbai and Heathen Beast. But this is it or? Now there is another band, Purgation coming from India too. Exactly from Kolkata/India. And they released their official output "Exterminated Malfeasance" 20th November 2013 on Slaughterhouse Records an underground record company based in USA. Purgation is formed in late 2010 and after some line up changes they are now Subhajit (vocals), Debanjan (guitars), Denzil (guitars), Ayushman (bass/vocals) and Abhinava (drums) and what they play is pure old school brutal death metal. The sound is just as a dirty, muddy old school death metal.

So you get to hear six songs (17:43 min), one of them is an intro, about morbidity, evil perceptions, occultism, rage, gruesome acts and against the system in a well-known arrangement like Malevolent Creation or Suffocation. The intro is a one minute scene of destruction and chaos and so starts the first song 'Uncanny Obsession' with fast drums and hard guitars. At first I thought that it can be an interesting output but soon I heard the typical old school songwriting. The first song becomes an atmospheric aspect together with long guitar-solos and after this a fast part again. And this is the songwriting for every song on this output. What I can say at this point, the songwriting is too clear, too easily recognizable and always the same and on top always well known growls from frontman and singer Subhajit, which I heard so much often before.

About the musical skills, it seems that the instrumentalists really know to play their instruments so that in sum this output is sure on the level like the heros from the 80s. In every song are hard riffs and nice solos but a little bit unstructured, the drums are fast and really cool and the voice is typical 80s or early 90s. Purgation is now the next old school death metal band and so once again reinforced my impression that there is a renaissance for old school death metal at the moment. I don’t know why this renaissance is running but it seems that I have once again missed a trend.

I hear this output and I like it, it’s nice, but nothing more. Good songs played by guys who knows to play hard and fast music but I miss so much interesting ideas and cause of that I can’t say that this is a great output. It’s OK but this output is boring me. There are millions of albums like that in the world. May be that in India death metal only now reaching the people and so it was excused that bands from India make music like the heros from the early 90s. Nevertheless this output does not strike me and so I have to say that this output is again not a must-have, interesting maybe for old school death metal-completists or underground new discoverers or someone who stucked in the 80’s or early 90s.
