Psychomancer - Inject The Worms
Hailing from Michigan City, in the United States is Psychomancer and they make one hell of a return with their new EP entitled “Inject the Worms”. This is a really stripped down yet thick sounding slab of death/thrash that will instantly leave you clamoring for more. On top of that, the mixture of influences and vibes emanating from these songs is absolutely incredible. Having only 1 demo and 2 full-lengths under their belt, It hasn’t taken Psychomancer long to hone their skills and develop their sound and style into what you will here on this CD EP. This is one of the best Midwest bands I have heard. Very methodic in approach in song construction and delivery, however, they blend the concept of death/thrash so well, it just winds up being an absolute clusterfuck of insane madness! And, I mean that in the most awesome way possible. It’s almost as if the band has altered these 2 genres at the molecular level. The transition between vibes is just so fluent and without flaw. Once you hear these tunes you will know exactly what I mean.
The guitar work on this cd takes you back a bit to the days of Kreator and in some instances you might even here a tad bit of Celtic Frost although the tone is a bit different. Some of you might also notice a small vibe of Darkthrone’s “Soulside Journey” in the riffs. But again, the tone is a bit different here as well. On top of that, other influences you will probably pick up on are Destruction, newer Sodom, and a more precisely interpreted vibe of Incubus from the “Beyond the Unknown” era. Now just imagine the Kreator, Celtic Frost, and Destruction played death metal style. I’ve reviewed bands like this before who take us down memory lane with visions of the “old school” but I really like Psychomancer’s approach. Most death/thrash bands have a distinction between the 2 genres when they play, but it seems as if Psychomancer take all of their thrash influences and vibes and play them death metal style. You might ask, “Well, how do you know it is a thrash influence then?” My answer to that is, over time and when you listen to a lot of metal you learn to develop and insight into these things and can tell a lot about what the band is playing. As far as the drums go, there is a certain rawness to them. It’s not that they are under produced, but I believe that somewhere in the mixing process the snares are ever so slightly “hollowed out”. Not overbearingly mind you, but just enough to add that raw edge to the rhythm of the material. That combined with the gouging style of the riffage only adds to the overall feel and utter sickness of the 6 tunes offered here.
Imagine, if you will, all the bands listed above and combine all of those vibes with the elements and production values of Disincarnate’s “Dreams of the Carrion Kind”. For some reason, every time I hear the first track on this EP, I always think of the Disincarnate song ”The Stench of Paradise Burning”. Then all through the rest of the 6 songs that feeling and vibe stays with me on top of all the other influences and vibes I picked up on. In the realm of EP releases, this is sure to be a classic. Also, it is limited to 1,000 copies so I am quite sure it will not last long. I highly recommend this to anyone who is into the above listed bands or to anyone who is into the death/thrash genre period. Every tune is absolutely dripping with heaviness. I have listened to this CD a few times now and I have picked up on no flaws whatsoever. This CD EP is released by Orchestrated Misery.
