Phalloplasty - Necrophagic Funeral Ritual
After briefly searching for information on the title of this band, I accidentally came across the word's definition. For any viewers interested in knowing I will briefly define; The word Phalloplasty is the process in which a lady wishes to become a man, and then has gender reassignment from a surgeon. Brutal death metal has always surprised me at what they come up with on their band names, and this one proved somewhat humorous - "Ten points to Gryffindor!"
Phalloplasty is a one man band from Las Vegas, Nevada. 'Necrophagic Funeral Ritual' is the band's second album, originally released in 2012, this version is the re-release and I'm assuming everything has been recorded again with a better overall production and more intense artwork. Having released several EPs, a split, and a demo since forming this project in 2009 - Zack (The guy behind it all) has developed quite a nice reputation in the underground extreme music scene.
The album starts with 'Butchered For Sustenance', which initially gives away how the majority of the album is going to sound. This is brutal death metal with hints of slam, and the occasional goregrind influence. Track two 'The Sick Room' is a better song of the two, developing more interesting uses from the genre. The vocals consist of the usual brutal death metal grunting/growling with the occasional burpy yelp which work well against the barraging assault of crusty riffs thicker than your Nan's pet turtle's shell. The drums could be programmed here, but It's hard to tell. All I know is that the snare is delicious to hear, a lot of brutal death metal bands usually lack in the drum department, but I found this really easy to get along with.
Grinding forward to 'Cannabis Induced Cannibalism' we are again force fed the mighty shredding of slamming riffs and possibly drum programmed drums, and really it's not until later track 'The Sadist Manifesto' that we begin to hear a little more variety in Zack's sound. This song opens up the genre with a more melodic feel and generally is a little slower than the rest. But don't worry - It's still really brutal.
Tucking my little fringe away under my flat-peak I bravely acknowledge that Zack probably hates the core sub-genres in the music world, that I am not guilty of being a massive fan of. Unless of course Zack is joking about when it comes to track eleven titled, 'Curb Stompin The Scene Kids' then there is no shame to be taken. Comedy aside, the track is still ace and proves to be worthy among this album, especially with his guttural's sounding especially harsh and dry on this track. Finishing the record we have a Putrid Pile cover of 'Drenched In Gasoline'. Instantly the track is recognisable from being different from any others here, there are more slam riffs used, and overall the song has a completely different structure. The cover is a great finish to this album, especially because we need more slam, more slam, MORE SLAM!
Overall this is an album I would probably buy on CD to add to my goliath music collection. The whole brutal death metal crossed with goregrind and slam really catches my attention, as usually these genres tend not to separate. I'm not entirely sure I could ever get too into goregrind alone, the genre is a little too much to handle when it comes to being obsessed with death and decay, but 'Necrophagic Funeral Ritual' is an album that mainly focuses on the comedic, fun side of extreme music, rather than overall obsessing on gore segments. Zack may appear to be of an elitist nature in the brutal music world, but with Phalloplasty he's done good here. The album of course is not for the listening pleasures of children, so any reading parents be warned - this is not a Justin Timberlake album, it's a brutal slamming death-gore-grinding-spazz-blackened-sludgecrust-viking-shoegaze album. Just joking on those last few...or was I.
