O.B.E.Y. - Romance Of Misanthropy

O.B.E.Y. is a group project composed by veterans of the black metal scene, Grim (vocals and bass), I.Gore (guitars), and Guy (drums). The following review is of O.B.E.Y.’s second effort "Romance Of Misanthropy" which was released in 2006.

Admittedly I’m not the biggest fan of black metal. For me this album was hard to listen too. Monotonous the 36 minutes made me feel like I was being robbed of what little time I have in this life. Having to drag myself through 7 songs I wouldn’t be able to describe singularly as they sound pretty much the same. Terrible vocals, accompanied by repetitive instrumentals leave me pleading for some novelty. The brilliance of this release is that it’ll make you feel emotions that are congruent with the themes Black metal relishes. Frustration, anger and desperation are some of the emotions you can look forward to hearing, though I doubt you would gain any sympathy from the artists. It feels like this was more for fun than a serious album allowing the artist to experiment and bring new life back to Black metals primitive roots.

In summary this album for me is like Marmite you’ll either love it or hate it. for those with no love for the scene you’d be wise to give this one a miss, Lovers/hard-core fans on the other hand will find their ears well at home.
