Nycticorax - Treatise Of Death
Incase you are wondering, the name Nycticorax derives from Greek, meaning "Night Raven" and according to the Wikipedia refers to the largely nocturnal feeding habits of the Black Crowned Night Hiron to put it in short. Nycticorax the band itself is a black metal outfit which formed in 2003 hailing out from Latvia. Prior to this 2013 release "Treatise Of Death" Nycticorax released 3 other full length albums: "Unbra Mortis" (2004), "Black Raven... Dark Night: (2006) and "Anima Tenebrarum" (2011), and prior to these was the release of the demo "Nosferatu" in 2004.
"Treatise Of Death" is atmospheric black metal with philosophical influences and a touche of old school death. The track titles are occult based and the lyrics are intelligent and have something to say other than just singing about Satan or death just because. Nycticorax takes both their music and their lyrics to a higher level lending something for the listener to ponder about. "Trease Of Death" is a diverse album with great definition between it's tracks. The raw torturous vocals is what gives recognition to this album, you can truly feel the agony as you listen especially with pieces such as the 7th track titled 'Gates Of The Soul' which is one of my favorites on the album. I also really love the tribal influence and how it turns to blackened brutality on the 8th track 'Goddess With 1000 Faces'. This album is both raw, edgy and tight all at once, is black and brutal with thick sounding concentrated guitar work. Tracks such as the 10th 'All Will Disappear Like A Dream' are surprisingly refreshing with the added violin and I think maybe some other instruments, either way it is atypical and lends a tone of the unexpected to the album. The soundscapes are well used and not overdone and also lend to the atmosphere of this album. Tracks 9 + 12 titled 'Requiem 1' and 'Requiem 2 (Epilogue)' are very dreamy instrumentals which take the listener far away to another place and time, well at least for a very short moment. These are very lovely parts within this album that are totally out of the norm and a far cry from all else that is happened within here. I find little unexpected atypical twists is what makes this album truly unique and think that the listen will find much to appreciate within this masterful creation.
"Treatise Of Death" is a very melodic, dark and brutally intense album which I find lends reminiscence to old Behemoth with touches of Behexen, Horna or Takke. The more I listen to it the more it grows into me. I highly recommend you check this out. In my opinion I lend this one 4 on 5, with a little smoothing on the edges this could have made a full 5 on 5 in my judgement.
