Nile - Worship The Animal

Nobody in death metal is unfamiliar with Nile by this point - they're one of the biggest names in death metal, with albums such as "In Their Darkened Shrines" and "Annihilation Of The Wicked" being mandatory classics within the genre these days. And though I didn't think much of their previous album and I slept through their incredibly boring live set (I'm not even kidding), I do hold some love for their brand of egyptian brutal death metal. So why they're suddenly decided to release this is a mystery to me.

"Worship The Animal" is a reissue of Nile's 1994 demo. That's all it is - it's not a compilation of early material, which is a problem at the very start. Not that the band's 1994 demo is bad - far from it - but to release a CD with just one, five track demo on it smells like a cash-in to me. The very least they could have done is include the "Festivals Of Atonement" EP or the 1996 "Ramses, Bringer Of War" demo, but no. We get a demo. No extras, no bonus tracks, and sad to say that this just isn't good value for money. That said, the demo itself is still quite a good listen as it represents a slightly thrashier and primal side to the band, long before they had the opportunity to really hone and refine their sound into the band we know today, but once again it's just not worth the money. Nearly every hardcore Nile fan, who're the ones that this is aimed at, will have downloaded a cassette rip of this from the internet anyway and it's most certainly not something you'd play to somebody as an introductory Nile record.

For it's musical content, this get a 4/5 because really, it's a good enough collection of songs that'll hold your interest. But whoever came up with the idea of releasing this gets a big fat -4/5 and a mummy's curse upon their heads. If "Worship The Animal" had the rest of Nile's pre-debut demos and a small smattering of b-sides then it'd be a fantastic little album, but one demo? Nobody can justify that, not at the level the band are at these days. A cash-grab that's best downloaded, never bought.
