Nervecell – Past, Present… Torture

Nervecell are a band I really took to when their previous album “Psychogenocide” came out. I loved how a band that didn’t come from the one of the usual places and although the band were clearly influenced by Nile I actually preferred “Psychogenocide” to the last couple of Nile albums.

"Past, present….. Torture" has been in the pipeline for a while and I was highly anticipating hearing something new from the band. The album packs a punch and is everything I was hoping for. The sound is big and clear. Its 10 full tracks with 3 instrumentals, interludes whatever you want to call them. 50 minutes in total it’s a bit of a big package and some could complain it’s a little long but I think on the other hand it makes up for the 6 year gap since their last release.

Everything is here, fast brutal riffs back by a thundering drum performance by Kevin Foley. Nervecell never have a full time drummer they always use guest session players and the Kevin has drummed for Abbath, Benighted, Decapitated and even Sepultura! The band aren’t really treading any new ground they are sticking to what they are good at and have delivered a strong death metal album that sits with Nile, Morbid angel and newer bands like Abysmal Dawn. It’s a pummelling listen but the band know when to throw in a melodic lead to break things up and the solo work on here is stunning.

The one gripe I do have is a lack of standout individual tracks. The songs really do bleed together and it’s hard to pick out a favourite but that didn’t really spoil listening to the record as a whole and it doesn’t really affect how much I liked the album. I’ve still a massive soft spot for the band and they deserve all the success they get.
