Naglfar - We Are Naglfar - Fuck You!
Naglfar released We Are Naglfar – Fuck You! in 1995 and it serves as a promotion for their debut outing Vittra. Over their 15 year career, while not being particularly prolific, Naglfar has written a very impressive catalogue of albums. This promotional album is in the vein of a more epic and melodic Dissection, but in terms of brutality it holds its own. It is the quintessential Swedish style of Black Metal, but it has its moments where it can get down and dirty with the filthiest Norwegian bands. The production is very cold, as is the typical Black Metal album. We Are Naglfar – Fuck You! is truly a diamond in the rough amongst Black Metal tapes!
We Are Naglfar – Fuck You! opens with an instrumental track entitled Vittra (Intro). It begins with a keyboard emulation an airy choir, then the distorted guitar and death knell kick in. When the clean guitar, knell and raspy vocals kick in, the listener is left with an impression of the impending danger which Naglfar is sure to deliver in the following tracks. There is quite a bit of Renaissance influence in the clean guitar which adds to the ambience. At the tracks ending we are left with just the drums and the sounding of the knell.
Through The Midnight Spheres does a miraculous of picking up where the intro Vittra left off. The initial melodies are very epic, but they seem to follow some of the archetypal patterns of the early Swedish Melodic Death Metal scene except in a Black Metal styling. This song relies upon pedal tones and twin guitar melodies.
The influence of Dissection’s debut album; The Somberlain, becomes very apparent on the track Falling Wings. This song predominately features the high pitch screams which are the mainstay of Black Metal, but they also flawlessly work in a few cleverly placed Death Metal growls. In this song Naglfar has done what many Black Metal bands attempt to replicate, which is adding a tasteful guitar that contributes to the overall ambience of the song.
Emerging From Her Weepings is the last song of the album and it starts out with a very haunting clean guitar part which soon emerges into a distorted tremolo section. This track also utilizes the knell which was originally heard in the opener Vittra. The double bass in this song is furious and consistent at keeping a rolling mid-tempo pace. The drums are commandeering in this song, and its a strong piece of music to end an album with.
The four songs featured on We Are Naglfar – Fuck You! were also used on Naglfar’s full-length debut entitled Vittra. Century Media reissued the Vittra album in 2005. The reissue is essential for anyone who prefers the Swedish, the more melodic sounding Black Metal. It is also recommended for any avid fan of Black Metal, as this album is a masterpiece of its own respective style.
