Naer Mataron - Long Live Death

Despite being known as a Black Metal band, it seems like Greece's Naer Mataron has gone more the way of Death Metal recently with their latest album 'Long Live Death.' Some of the base structure of music can be seen as more Melodic Black Metal, but the vocal structure is much deeper and feels more like the music is a more haunting version of Cannibal Corpse. The result? Very satisfying. Tracks like "Intro" set the listener up with a foreboding spoken word format of twisted prophecy before exploding with "Apocalypse..." This track hits like a truck in the ferocious style of Black Metal but includes much more rhythm and less of a raw, buzz saw tone that repeats over and over. Other tracks like "Whisper Of Begotten Premonition" churn right along with litte remorse save for a cymbal moment here and there, but overall the track feels like a more Death Metal influenced version of Belphegor, especially concerning the drums.

Other tracks like "Goat Worship" are rawer, more haphazard with the riffs that just seem to be a bit all over the place, but at the same time more technical and skilled to enjoy in their bursts rather than just a streamining of guitar riffs and drumming that sounds like machine guns. While there is not much room for atmosphere, some tracks do slow down a bit like "I Am Lucifer..." for a slow, churning pace that repeats over and over but still does wonders by keeping the momentum of the music going. Fans of slower, mid paced Death or Black Metal will definitely get into this sort of track. Unforunately, those who were expecting earlier Black Metal from Naer's earlier days aren't going to be impressed, but the shift to Death Metal shouldn't be that surprising. There are still some traces of Black Metal in there and the music is still thoughtfully blasphemous when it comes to the lyrics, so the shift may not be as radical as one may fear compared to something like Power Metal to Hardcore.
