Mumakil - Flies Will Starve
If you follow the grindcore scene then the name Mumakil most likely rings a bell. The quartet from Geneva, Switzerland is an already established name in the extreme underground scene and "Flies Will Starve" is their third album released by Relapse Records.
In 35 minutes, your ears will be humiliated by endless grinding swaths, speedy guitar riffs and the angry barking of the vocalist Thomas. Mumakil means grindcore business - pure and simple. There are absolutely no surprises and unfortunately after minutes of listening this become a problem. "Flies Will Starve" just doesn't offer any variety at all. With the exception of "War Therapist" which offers a little bit of thrash and crust guitar riffing and to some extent "Fucktards Parade", all other tracks sound almost one and the same. Yes, you have the raging power, you have the sheer speed of the blastbeat drumming, you have the undeniable passion of Mumakil to grind everything that has the bad luck to stand on their way... But if you don't pay strong attention you will lose any idea which one exactly is the song you are listening to. The lack of variety and groove for me spoils the pleasure of listening to this otherwise quite good album. The production is on a very good level, so is the cover artwork with its apocalyptic image.
Mumakil know how to grind but variety is what "Flies Will Starve" need to become from average to an exceptional extreme grindcore album. In case you like grindcore though - take a listen at this album anyway.
