Mitochrondrion – Antinumerology
Now there’s a band name that trips off the tongue easily as this Canadian act uses a pure biological moniker for their band name whose function is to produce energy for the cell by respiration (I am a Science teacher) which gave me cause to see if there were other bands with similar names which there weren’t so I have some suggestions for up and coming bands to use words such as lysosome, chromatin, peroxisome, or ribosome to name a few on a similar theme. But getting back on track, originally out in 2013 and like a lot of underground black metal releases this was given a limited edition seven inch run by Dark Descent Records which I did hear back then alongside the bands previous two albums of equally top quality black metal with more than a dash of death metal thrown in. All the band members are involved in other projects and that experience is plainly evident in the playing and song writing on all the bands output.
This three track EP contains an onslaught the moment 'Insummation' opens up, the warring assault is enveloping initially, before the song shifts focus into a despairing embittered post blackened malfeasance that has your hackles raised. That sonic warfare is ever present though as the blasting detonates without warning in waves of pernicious rabidity. Scornful malice and ultra-deep vocal emanations are inhumanly embedded into the song and it is that pervading sense of wanton carnage which continues into '137 (Mors Formulae)'. The way this track seems to crawl from the speakers is hideous creating an Immolation like atmosphere within the miasmic battering freneticism leaving the closing title track to solidify your blood with its eerie and disturbing guitar work which has a despairing quality backed by a repetitive percussive beat. The song has a cloying grotesque feel like something is reaching out to seize you icy fingers when it suddenly ends leaving you wanting more.
If Mitochondrion are unfamiliar to you then I’d strongly urge you to check the EP out plus their other releases as they are gems, and this EP is a very tasty start off point with three tracks of outright sonic terror.
