Misery Index - The Killing Gods
I've always had a soft spot for Misery Index I was first made aware of them when I heard the "DIscordia" album but when 2008's "Traitor's" dropped I was hooked. I saw them supporting Hate Eternal around that time and they blew Hate Eternal off the stage. They were amazing!
For the uninitiated Misery Index formed when 3 (yes 3!) members left Dying Fetus and two went on to form Misery Index although frontman, bassist and vocalist Jason Netherton is the only original member today. Saying that the bands current line up is stable and have been going for a few years now. What I love about Misery Index is that they don't just slot into a sub genre. They get branded grincore or death metal but it's obvious they has influences across the spectrum and don't mind throwing it all into the mix and above all their heavy as fuck! In a sense they remind alot of Napalm Death. They are also one of the few bands that are heavy as they are that sound like they actually mean it. Jason actually sounds full of rage when he spits his politically charged lyric's it doesn't sound like he has done a thousand takes to get the note just right. Besides that Adam Jarvis is the most under rated drummer around at the moment. His work is just stunning.
"The Killing Gods" isn't in a rush to stomp any heads then this album rather sneaks up behind you and slits your throat. The first two songs both have slow, atmospheric introductions. So the first two songs take up 4 tracks. There's a dark atmosphere on this album and dare I say it quite a bit of melody! But it all just add's to the ferocity. They don't mind throwing in a breakdown in the mix either just see on opening track 'The Calling' when the sang falls into a mid paced groove and don't get me started on the solo's! Then there's the Thrash-tastic 'The Harrowing' which is simply stunning. The albums title track showcase how far the band have come in terms of song writing. There's is far more to this band then simply blasting away mindlessly. If the groove during 'Gallows Humour' doesn't make you nod your head nothing will!
2014 so far has been a fantastic year for extreme music and there are plenty of great albums still to come I worry this gem will be overlooked as Misery Index generally are in the big scheme of things. They always seem to be touring and in work but on the whole they should be bigger. If you haven't already check this band out. You won't be sorry!
