Masachist - Scorned
Damn it this is a hard one. This Polish beast is alive in the books since 2007. Since then their only releases are, a demo and a full length. So I believe you can imagine the mountain of expectations a band creates, when it manages to knock the shit out of you with just one full length! I was familiar with Masachist's first full length "Death March Fury" of 2009 a couple of years now, and I must admit that I thought it was an excellent job. Very raw and very intense! So I could not expect anything less from their second full length and new release for 2012 "Scorned". And that is what one gets when he listens to 'Scorned'. Raw and intense high quality Polish deth metal! And of course I wouldn't be making this whole intro if there wasn't a big 'but' in the whole story…
The whole music of 'Scorned' gets interesting after 5-6 hearings. In fact when I first listened to it I was a bit shocked. The intro track 'Drilling The Nerves' is a mid tempo song based on a break'n'cut beat... Not the ideal intro to start an album where one would expect to be swept away by the rage and the barbarity of the band! The rest of the album continues in mid tempo riffs and beats without that meaning that one, can not find raging blast beats here and there, or more intense moments in the whole release... but I'd say that the whole cradle sags 70-30 against blastbeats!In their new release Masachist tried to get more atmosphere in their music! To be totally frank with you after the second hearing I found myself sunk deep into their lair. Once you get passed the first shock, you discover very interesting themes in the guitar, and a very smart drummer that knows when to blast and when to keep it down depending on the riff and the groove he wants to pull every time! The vocals are very brutal and I believe they are way more improved, if we take for reference their first one. Better vocal lines and a better flow, and of course a Vaderish aura that only adds to the whole outcome!
The whole album comes with a great layout. Just don't let the first impression make your call. "Scorned" is not the album that will haunt your CD player for 2012-2013, that is for sure. There are probably tons of releases that will grab your attention way more tight but this one has the ability that very few albums have. Once you get to know it, it spreads its quality and you find yourself having a stupid smile after it is done! "Scorneds" bad point was that it succeeded a great first full length that created great expectations from the second. It will never be the album that will change your view on death metal but it is one of the classic examples of the 'wine like' attitude on some metal albums. It gets better with age! Nice effort from the guys in Masachist! Definitely worth a shot.
