Lotus Circle - Caves
This is a five track full length release by Greek band Lotus Circle, not a band I know anything about at all, they are described as drone, doom, black metal, so a real interesting mix for me! It all kicks off with a track of over nine minutes in length that covers the drone, doom thing very well, “… To Witness Under the Stars” is a great introduction to the album, real droney start to it before we have a change of tack mid way through and then back to a real heavy doom laden second half, very interesting start to the album. The whole album comes in at just under thirty nine minutes so its not too long an album but with only five tracks you know you are going to get some epically long ones on it, which is all right by me with this style of music. I have absolutely no idea who the band are, I have scoured a few sites to see if I could find out who plays in the band but with no luck, all I can say that the drums are very minimal and the guitar is fine for what it is, drone, no earth shattering riffs just some really good work.
Now drone is certainly not to everyone’s taste but I quite like it as a total change from what I usually listen to, so it does become a nice change. There are a lot of doom elements in this album and it has a very dark, evil feel to it throughout which works really well. This band have been going strong since 2006 and this is their second full length, there is also a demo and a couple of slits out there, so I will be doing a bit of searching to listen to more of this bands material, certainly it is a depressing genre but I said before it is a nice change to listen to a bit of this type of stuff.
My favourite tracks on this are probably “Dawn of a Dead Sun” which has a nice crushing riff throughout and become kind of hypnotic after a while, my other favourite track is “From the Depths” which starts of with a nice bit of distortion and a strange little riff, an epic track of nearly ten minutes in length too!
Not for everyone this album but I liked it, some great doomy passages a bit of ambient black metal and plenty of drone thrown in the mix, if you are looking for something a little different try this one out, you just might like it!!
