Lost Brethren – Cosmological Constant

Lost Brethren are a two man project playing technical death metal which is now on their third album "Cosmological Constant". This album is really frustrating because Anthony Deane and Nik Plume are clearly very talented and are obviously more than capable of churning out a decent metal track but something about this just doesn’t sit right.

Now I love an instrumental, I as much as anyone consider Iron Maiden’s 'Transylvania' or Metallica’s 'Orion' as much a classic as “'Aces High' or 'Battery' but generally speaking if you have a track without vocals you still need a melody or something still leading you or guiding through the song and the song normally goes through different stages it tells a story through feelings rather than words. I suppose an extreme example would be "Tubular Bells"! But with this album the songs are generally short, there’s not a track on here that hits 5 minutes and it’s just shredding and guitar solos.  Granted, impressive riffs and some great lead work, there are even a couple of guest spots. For instance Michael Keene from The Faceless appears on the title track but it all just feels unfinished. It just pops from track to the next track. Quite frankly it sounds like a demo. It sounds like a CD of tracks a guitarist would give the rest of his band to work on ideas with.

The crucial point is this, when instrumental music works you don’t miss, shit you don’t even notice the absence of vocals. This just feels incomplete. Sorry!
