Krypts - Unending Degradation
With a cover that smothers you in dark abandon amid a garish red sky, it seems there is little left to do but ‘hope’ and even all signs of that seem to have been extinguished above the towering stone walls that only serve to leave one feeling isolated and wallowing in despair. The clever artwork has been created by T. Ketola.
Perpetual Day
The familiar sound of doom laden riffs, this intro emerges only to sink back into the semi-darkness.
Blessed Entwinement
The death doom riffs are indeed raw but the cookie monster vocals seem rather monotonous, dominating over a ticking melodic drum beat, that is seriously lacking in emotional depth and failing to leave a lasting imprint on the mind.
Open The Crypt
Dark and ambient in mood, it plods along and then from nowhere becomes dynamic, complex and interesting. Not a one dimensional track it has to be said offering that nice uplifting tempo amid the suffocating doom.
Dormancy Of The Ancients
A flutter of fast tiny beats can be heard like birds wings flapping against a window pane and after that it is anything but sweet! Deep surging heavy rhythms swathe you in ambiance giving a dark, bleak structure to its unholy sound, and holds some nice twinges of welcome melody.
Inhale
This slowly creeps like a lazy tortoise – it does not get very far in a long space of time. Meanders at its own pace, is hardly distinguishable amid the constant repetitive beats with not many variations, and slowing even further to bring in some deeper penetrating rhythms, but sadly leaves me void of feeling.
The Black Smoke
Now this track has a lot more life attached to it, for a death/doom metal band! Sweeping in and out of a varying rhythm with more uplifting vocal giving it that added bite, and so, good wind-milling material! Interesting track with added touches of variety and flavour.
Day Of Reckoning
This track offers melody amid the doom and penetrates heavily giving the overall balance of maturity in ambiance and catchiness. Vocally gnarly and raspy with a tremendous guitar solo, be it a brief one, until it delves into the endless depths of chilling doom once more.
Beneath The Archaic
Another slow burner, but somehow this has an eerie creepiness about it that captures the attention. The ticking time bomb drum beat can be heard regimenting its beats to a deep growling barrage of low toned vocal. It spirals straight forward, into a menacingly, unrelenting and intriguing track.
With high moments of deep growling to eerie creepiness and back to its chilling and malevolent doom laden riffs it does possess a lot of potential, however, saying that I feel that there is just too much doom and not enough death metal on this album so it can become a little monotonous at times as on the tracks ‘Blessed Entwined’ and ‘Inhale’ which tend to drone on for ages, but the highlights for me, most definitely are ‘Open The Crypt’ ‘Dormancy Of The Ancients’ ‘Black Smoke’ ‘Day Of Reckoning’ and ‘Beneath The Archaic’ they all hold that something extra special without being too subliminally dark and ominous. So there is still hope...
