Impalers - God From The Machine
Following on from their ‘Prepare for War’ EP, Danish thrashers Impalers have an album that I frankly didn’t expect based on that said EP. Yes we still Teutonic thrash monsters a-plenty, like ‘I Am Revolution’ but there is a pleasing level of more expansive music from tracks like ‘Beyond Trinity’ (from which you may find some similarities here and there to a riff from Metallica’s momentous ‘Ride the Lightening’ release). With a track like this, character is built, with a track like ‘The Walls of Eryx’ there is so much going on, I say it’s something of an epic number but criminally lacks any vocals for which I find very strange for a 8-plus minute track of this nature. With this I find influences like Jeff Waters and Annihilator, more experimental whist maintain a really cool overall thrash vibe. But its not just a developed album, it has its moments of youthful energetic Armageddon too.
‘Ghost’ is a really sharp, aggressive thrasher, fast as it can be, energetic enough to form a wicked circle pit, this is the one track that really makes you go nuts. Its razor sharp bridge work ensuring exhaustion for the guitarist no doubt, to the tight delivery matched with drumming precision, it almost falls into speed metal, but if you want a more modern reference to the German trinity of thrash masters, then check out Impalers, you will be rewarded.
The album shows growth and expansion of their very clear influences, a nice touch with most others recently content with following past glories. Like I said, its not just a raw thrasher, it has a lot more soul, something I was surprised about at first and it took a few spins to really gel, but when it did, yeah, this is the business!
