Hypno5e - Des Deux L'une Est L'autre
Hailing from France, this quartet has built recognition especially in the USA. Hypno5e presented their debut album Des Deux L'une Est L'autre containing 10 tracks of truly diverse, experimental yet an intelligent combination of musical genres enough to say that they have created a fusion which can be hardly labeled!
The first track ‘Maintained Relevance Of Destruction’ starts with instrumental/electric guitar pieces accompanied by lo-fi speeches which at first it reminds me quite of Paradise Lost from Draconian Times, which suddenly engulfs into some kind of Modern Progressive Technical Metal/Hardcore with hints of Swedish Death Metal, especially the vocal screams which are typical of that genre. This very track is full of instrumental intervals, technique, tempo changes and mood swings clearly expressed through melodies along the rest of musical passages.
However this is not over! The next track ‘Maintained Relevance Of Destruction pt.2’ is a continuation of the previous tracks which starts with instrumental psychedelic passages accompanied by 2 clean singers which I think they are 2 male vocals singing on ‘falsetto’. The dual vocal performance is not bad at all, however not pleasing enough as their manner of singing doesn’t fully correspond with the music. One interesting fact is about the high-pitched vocal vibrato which sounds quite feminine, and if these “feminine” voices are performed by the band male singers, I must say that the attempt is quite outstanding, but nevertheless, there is still room for improvement!
‘Daybreak At the Slaughter-House’ is quite a paradox. This song is an example of a good blend of pounding crushing groovy brutality with everlasting beauty. A song filled with sheering tough guitar sound, hysterical screams and long echoed passages consisting of instrumental passages, speeches and male vocal singing. Judging on the song title…one may imagine something harsh…and indeed, the music is harsh but not only as this song is rich with technical classical guitars. This song somehow reminded me of the cult Phlebotomized in their last album Skycontact.
The 4th track H492053 (????) is a good psychedelic trippy ambient song with muffled drum sampling, echoed melodies, lo-fi speeches (male and female voices) accompanied by occasional pounding metal. A very good melancholic and yet mood swinging track.
The Hole again represents another well made psychedelic ambient/electronic song with basic but a beautiful blend of electronic drum programming, sampling and instrumental guitars accompanied by clean vocal singing/laments. This song engulfs in some kind of Thrashing Technical Modern Metal with varied tempo changes, pounding guitar parts filled with nice fret sounds and harmonics plus outstanding bass-lines and vocal experimentations. The minor drawback is again the clean vocal performance which sounds either not-so-ear-pleasing, or just not in the right place, however the ideas are there. The same can be partially said about the song ‘Scarlet Fever’, which is again another good psychedelic ambient instrumental song; however the clean voice performance is somehow better.
‘Tutuguri’ however is a song which is quite metal unlike the rest. Filled with blast beats, outstanding drumming performance and chunky pounding down-tuned guitars, this song proves that Hypno5e can be quite brutal. The same song skips into soft instrumental passages accompanied by drumming, and few seconds of clean vocal performance which unfortunately sounded off-key.
After Tutuguri, there is ‘Naked Lunch pt.1’ which sounds with some kind of drone and feedbacks which suddenly gets filled with beautiful and yet eerie guitar melodies which builds up itself till it meets drums and other breaks filled with lo-fi vocal speeches (like coming out of the radio). The whole song becomes more industrialized thanks to the synthetic drum beats and calm through synthetic orchestrations. Quite a cinematic track!
The part 2 of the song starts with some groovy techno music approached by pounding guitars, and filled with French conversations. This suddenly changes into tough hardcore for a while, and then it gets back into ambient music. The final song ‘Remords Posthumes’ is nothing more than just a 2 minute song filled with badly recorded pianos (on purpose), accompanied by male choirs and some other weird sounds.
Hypno5e is quite an innovative band with an outstanding ability of blending various kinds of musical genres thus creating an intelligent fusion of blistering harshness integrated with the side of celestial beauty. Filled with distant cinematic sounds, peaceful melodies, ethereal passages, and spine-breaking metal, it is clearly evidential that Hypno5e will definitely be one of those bands which will leave a good name (if properly promoted of course).
For those who really want an association with other bands, I can simply conclude here that if you like bands like: Opeth, Mastodon, Ulver, Dream Theatre, Phlebotomized, In Flames and Paradise Lost, you will definitely love this one! STRONGLY RECOMMENDED!
