Hostage Of Fate - At First, Man Tried To Create God… And He Succeeded

This is an unsigned death metal band from Greece (the Island of Rhodes to be precise), the style of rather close to my personal preference and there is more than often nods to latter Death material, especially with the vocals sounding similar to Chuck Schuldiner’s too. Progressive death is an art, this is really done well, there is not too much busy guitar work, there is a cool balance as the opening namesake title track proves. This delivers a tight rendition of some killer riffs and the arrangement is both thoughtful and very precise.

For me ‘When Man Decides War’ stands out, it has the progressive death groove that sense of purpose in its sound, a sound that delivers on so many levels. On previous tracks you can hear the double tracking on this one the sound is thicker and more cohesive. Riff after riff, tempo change after tempo change, the consistency is cool. The Final track may confuse though, at a little over ten minutes this delves truly into the progressive landscape leaving most of the death, in fact most of the death metal behind, I find this something like what The Ocean or Isis would so, I feel water for some reason when they music plays, perhaps it’s the intense dreamy nature of this actual track. But this is rather suitable as this is a cool way to end the overall energetic nature of this album, an album with an unnecessary long title! The only track I wince a little at is ‘Mental Malfunctions’, a great as it is on its own a couple of the guitar runs screech and go a little off key to my ears anyway that is, see what you think, again with such guitar effects used in some places, I feel the need to be on the water, but you are thrust back above the surface when the tempos begin to pick up the pace, a sense of rescue also, but not from a shallow rendition I should add, more of a positive stance for sure.

Released in digital format and easily available from their bandcamp page, I would seriously recommend you check them out. They have a style that may have been tackled and executed by very few talented individuals, but Hostage of Fate nail this art; this is rather good I must say.
