Horrisonous - A Culinary Cacophony

I wasn't familiar with Horrisonous and I saw a forum post with a link attached. The link was a song from their upcoming album, "A Culinary Cacophony". I was into it. I had to hear more, so I picked up "The Plague Doctors". I enjoyed it and couldn't wait to hear the Australian quintet's progression.

Starting off with 'Kuru Worship'. This promising opener begins hellish & doomy. Ohhhhhhh, the riff!, the deep/evil harmonies, crushing drums and tortured vocals summon all that is unholy. Half way through the track... speed and riffs reminiscent of old school Finnish gods. Damn, this track keeps getting better and better! The song slows down to a close with a section which brought "Black Winter Day" era Amorphis to mind. Always a good thing! Let's see what lies ahead.

'The Gavage' comes next. This song is a solid follower. Another doom/death/blackened beating. I'm really impressed by Yonn McLaughlin's vocals!!!! The range. DM growls, old school Nordic BM, mids comparable to Tomas Lindberg. I'm not against a vocalist that has one style or pitch, but this keeps it interesting.

A couple songs later, we have, 'A Tale Of Matriphagy'. This song takes me back to the days when Swedish melodic DM was all the rage. Almost Eucharist-like. This track seemed to stray from the previous three. Caught me off guard a little. That could just be me. I'll leave that up to the listener. Not a bad track AT ALL, just a tad unexpected based on what I'd been hearing.

Coming off my nostalgic journey is the succeeding song, 'Flesh Presented For Orgasmic Torment'. Beginning with a hell of a banger riff and more of the low growls, I'm sucked right in. More of the doomy/death I became fond of in the album's openers. And oh damn - the middle section - a mesmerizing clip of gloomy harmonies, a chilling lead, pounding drums and more of Yonn's devilish vocals. Only to revert back to the opening riff that ripped my head off.

This debut LP rounds out with 'The Number Of The Feast'. A sturdy mid tempo/trash beat/blasting ender. My favorite part of this song is it's final minutes. Fading out in a crushing, trudging, heavy manner along with more of the ominous harmonies.

At times, this album had a hard time keeping my attention, but all in all it's a solid LP.

Stand out tracks: 'Kuru Worship', 'The Gavage' and 'Flesh Presented For Orgasmic Torment'.
