Helmsplitter - Enraptured By Suffering
Can't hate'em. Just can't hate'em. If you are into the extreme sound, then you'll definitely enjoy this new second full length from Helmsplitter! It is the rock'n'roll attitude those guys have that bind all the extreme genres into one unique blend. Don't know how to call it. There are times, I hear Malevolent Creation and Deicide, and others that bring a lot to Marduk, but in the same time these influences are melted into one unique sound that smashes everything in its path. I believe the closest band to their style is Angelcorpse, but again Helmsplitter have their own unique sound!
It's the roughness of the production, and the times these guys tend to rock it out in this second full length which makes em different, and at the same time so close to the band references mentioned above! "Enraptured By Suffering" consists of 11 songs, and lasts 45 minutes. 45 minutes in which you will find yourself blasted by their death metal moments, and cheered in their most death'n'roll, and in the same time making awful black metal grimaces with their black metal interleaves. Damn it, it is like listening to a proper sounding band's rehearsal. It almost gives you the feeling of being there, and the songs sound so fresh, which automatically enlists those ravagers from Illinois to the bands who actually enjoy listening to their own shit. The lust of 5 guys walking into a studio and ripen' the place to shreds anyway they can, is obvious once the play button is pushed! No fakes and no attempts on imitating others, and of course no attempt to impress here. These guys clearly are the type that doesn't give a shit on what you think of their music. And this is a big plus to the whole outcome, cos playing what you like makes you more passionate about it, and this means that the result will be more direct and even more headstomping if what we're talking is xtreme sound.
Damn it we're talking about some heavy shit here! The riffs are really there. Their presence is loud, and they really tend to get into your brain cos not a long while after, you'll be muttering along. The drums are relentless, the bass is granite steady, and the vocal lines are simply awesome. Growling-Shrieking and Goul-ish (Angelcorpse style). The production is rougher than ever and in the same time clearer than ever with no xtra fuzz, leaving the instruments to sound as natural as possible! 45 minutes of relentless extremity by Helmsplitter and trust me. Time will have no meaning with them. A true underdog if I may say, who proved to be the heavy gun here. Definitely one of the year's best!
