Hellyum – Fantaziare
Hellyum blast out of the Czech Republic with their debut album “Fantaziare”. A breath of fresh air in death metal, Hellyum are creative and are not burdened by any rules or restrictions on what they should or shouldn’t do. While musically it’s a mix of death and thrash metal with a bit of melody although they are not afraid to mess with formulas and styles but what makes Hellyum truly standout is their vocalist J.S Desed who has a unique approach, while doing the standard screams and growls he throws in some very impressive clean vocals and plays around with different effects on his voice.
While opening track 'Digato Borba' sets thing up nicely it’s when 'Krakosa' kicks in you realize you’ve stumbled across something different, with a opening with a mid paced rock verse J.S sings with a robot effect on his voice, with the rich pronunciation of the Czech language it works brilliantly.
This won’t be for everyone. Hellyum will have a marmite affect on people but that’s not a bad thing. This album is definitely worth a listen and whatever your opinion you will have to admit it’s one of the most original albums you have heard in a while. They take the death metal archetype and throw in (dare I say) the creative and heavier elements of nu-metal and make their own sound. It makes me think of what would happen if Mike Patton went ahead and fronted a death metal band, which he has always threatened to do. Granted it doesn’t always work but when it does it verges on brilliance. It will be interesting to see how this develops.
