Guilles de Rais – Is This How You Envisioned Your Life?

Here’s the band Guilles de Rais, a band whose name I can’t pronounce (I’m not master of the Spanish tongue). Luckily I’m a review writer, so I can just type in the words, without knowing the actual meaning. Guilles de Rais is a 5 headed band from Spain. After 2 demo’s, they release their debut full-length album in 2008 and called it “Is this the way you have envisioned your life?”

The album starts with an instrumental track, with the exception of one growl. It’s melodic and even a folk metal track. Then the second track comes in and…. BAM. Where the first track ends with an acoustic guitar piece, the second track starts off with a nice death metal riff. Next to the first track, there’s no folk music on this album, so what was the use of this track. To me there’s none, the first track could have been left off of this disc, because it adds totally nothing to the cd. How about the other songs on this cd? The others songs are death metal, death metal riffing, grooves, some nice melodies (like the title track and “On this fucking earth”) and death metal roars and higher pitched screams. The album has a good production, I would love to hear a bit more bass, but there’s nothing actually bad about the production. Overall this album lacks a bit of originality though, nothing I haven’t heard before, but definitely not bad. To also add a little more dept to the songs, sometimes synthesizers are added to create some atmosphere, well done.

Overall this is a nice melodic death metal, debut album, although it lacks a little originality. If this band keeps this up and add a bit more originality, they might go places. Keep up the good work.
