Goatmill - Apocryphal

“Apocryphal” is a promotional release by Goatmill. These guys are emerging from the dark vaults of Ohio, USA and it seems like it´s their first sign of life. Their music´s dark but melodic with a few keyboard sequences and it reminds me a bit of Dimmu Borgir meets a melodic Death Metal act. The tempo varies in every song from stomping mid-paced passages to furious blasting, while the beneficial technical skills build the basement for an interesting underground release. Fortunately Goatmill´s songs aren´t too overloaded with excessive fretboard gymnastics, so there´s a comprehensible guiding theme in each track. The vocals are sometimes dark and menacing, sometimes like a Black Metal influenced hoarse shrieking, but always adequate and expressive. The sound quality is more than ok for an underground release and “Apocryphal” is a cool promotional offering by a promising band. Check Goatmill out if you like a thrilling mixture of Death- and Black Metal. 3/5 points for entertaining 34 minutes of darkness. A good start.
