Galvanizer – Sanguine Vigil

My affection for death metal bands from Finland knows no bounds as more often than not they are by far the most grisly and corrosive within the genre and Galvanizer can add their name to that ever burgeoning putrefying list as this young band (they look young to me anyway) hit the scene with a debut full length after a couple of demos and an EP. Noticeably the sound on this album is incredibly dense, asphyxiating claustrophobic to the point of choking in an extremely good way and whilst there are parts where it comes across as being a little distorted depending on your point of view and your hi-fi system this album makes for a terrifying listen that begins with 'Mood For The Blade'. The tacky intro of spoken words and crackling fire and background forest noises maybe a cliché but who cares as the album slams in with a wall of pyroclastic bass. The sludge like pace is riddled with double bass cannon balls and sporadic blasting bullets which hint at an Autopsy like assembly as the riff break has that gnarly down-tuned fetidness.

The drum beat start to 'Deathbeat Deity' initiates the song well, with its Swedeath flavour, the tempo is upbeat as the bass rumbles like an engine with a Dismember like guitar hook perforating the molasses thick bass wall that leads into the title track which is slightly longer and begins with a slower riff. I just love that dirging funereal pace as the bass drum kicks very slowly like the march to your own execution. That Dismember touch reappears again without cloning any of their work as a vicious riff head-butts into the track with cymbal sibilation slicing at the jugular. Some of the bass work reminded me of Repulsion due to it putrescent riffing style and the way it infests the songs as the title is diseased with awesome riffing corruption that continues in 'Grind Till… You’re Dead' where that Repulsion trait completely manifests full in your face like battery acid sprayed from a hose.

'Gorefestication' is immense and begins with yet more bass riffing contamination that has a crust/punk aura to it, as the discordant riff that follows welds to the rancidity of the song followed by the blasting explosion as I felt occasionally the track and some aspects of the songs have similarities to Basement Torture Killings though this release is far grimier. I cannot overstate how utterly repugnant, but brilliant, the bass work on this album is and whilst it’s not technically amazing, it underpins every song and how loathsome every song is as 'Premature Rot' has a catchy beat and juggernaut double bass roll. A sample starts 'Unfinished Autopsy' in true horror style as the song has a slow gurgling start with double bass pulverising that gathers the songs momentum ready for the riff break which doesn’t result in a blast preferring to adopt a steady catchy beat.

In the stream of death metal that is emerging during this year this one is set to corrupt the pile with its decaying pestilential horrific magnificence.
